Upholstery fabric can sometimes account for up to 70% of the
price of a piece of furniture, but luckily there is an array of
different fabrics that can accommodate all price ranges. Furniture
is usually covered with two different types of fabric: woven fabrics
and leather.
Leather is usually more expensive than furniture made from other
fabrics. Tanning and maintaining a quality hide takes more time
than producing fabric and leather tends to last longer–even
becoming softer with time. People like to flaunt leather couches
and car interiors as status symbols, making it the most-preferred
upholstery fabric.
However, that’s not to say that woven fabrics don’t
deserve their due. Because of their affordability, more people
buy furniture covered with wool, cotton, silk, and polyester fabrics
than leather. Although these vary in price and quality, it’s
important to know that a tighter-woven upholstery fabric will
last longer than one made from than loose weaves.
